On Thursday, officials from the National Identity Management Commission across the country started a strike action over the fear of spreading COVID-19 in the department.

In an interview with one of our correspondents in Abuja, the President of the Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, the NIMC unit, Asekokhai Fortunate, said that the virus had already been identified in three of the Agency’s officials at its headquarters.

He said the employees were angry because the commission’s management was aware of the growth, but kept it from employees who would have taken the required precautions to protect themselves.
Lucky also said on Friday (today) the employees would meet with the government to discuss COVID-19 fright and other issues that led to the strike.

Following the workers’ strike, people who trooped around the country to the NIMC offices were stuck as there was nobody to attend to them.

Recall that, on December 14, 2020, the Federal Government directed telecommunications providers to disconnect subscribers’ telephone lines that did not link their national identity numbers to their subscriber identification modules.

At the NIMC offices, no less than 164 million Nigerians who do not have the NIN were soldiers, disregarding COVID-19 protocols such as wearing face masks and social distancement.
