Google has suspended “free speech” social networking app, Parler from its App Store over its refusal to remove “egregious content”.
Parler describes itself as “unbiased” social media and has become popular with Twitter-banned individuals.
But Google said that the software had failed to delete violence-inciting messages.
Apple has also warned Parler that if it does not comply with its content-moderation criteria, it will withdraw the app from its App Store.
Parler, launched in 2018, has proven especially popular among US President Donald Trump’s supporters and right-wing conservatives. Twitter and Facebook have also been accused by such groups of wrongly censoring their thoughts.
Although Mr Trump himself is not a customer, following previous growth bursts in 2020, the platform already features many high-profile contributors.
Senator Ted Cruz of Texas boasts 4.9 million followers on the network, while host Sean Hannity of Fox News has about seven million.
After the US election, it briefly became the most-downloaded app in the United States, following a clampdown by Twitter and Facebook on the dissemination of election misinformation.
However, both Apple and Google have said the app fails to comply with content-moderation requirements.
On Parler, John Matze, chief executive of the app, said: “We won’t cave to politically motivated companies and those authoritarians who hate free speech!”
