In Uganda, the internet blackout that had entered its fifth day on Monday was over.

However, the BBC’s Patience Atuhaire says social media is still blocked and only accessible via VPN.

With just hours to go, the internet was shut down on Wednesday night before polling stations opened for general elections on Thursday.

This was shortly after hundreds of pro-government Ugandan accounts were seemingly suspended by Facebook.

While reflecting on Facebook’s decision, President Yoweri Museveni said there was no way anyone would come to Uganda and determine what was good or bad.

Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda told NBS television that prior to restoring the internet, the government was reviewing the security situation.
