Virologists and other medical experts have cautioned that if adequate arrangements are not made for their transportation and storage, 100,000 doses of the country’s planned COVID-19 vaccine may become useless.
In separate interviews with The PUNCH, the experts, including the Chief Executive Officer of the Institute of Human Virology, Nigeria, Dr Patrick Dakum; the medical virologist, Dr Oladipo Kolawole, and the Professor of Virology at the University of Ibadan, David Olaleye, advised the government to ensure that the vaccine was adequately stored and transported to achieve its desired result.
In an interview with Sunday PUNCH on Saturday, the Director-General of the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, Prof. Babatunde Salako, said there was not enough room at the moment to store the vaccine.
He also said that another big problem will be how to transport the vaccine to rural areas at a temperature of -70 degrees Celsius.
According to him, Nigeria will have to buy other forms of vaccines in the future that do not need low temperatures, such as Pfizer.
