Approximately 43 million national identity numbers have been sent to the National Identity Management Commission for authentication by telecommunication companies in order to have them registered with their respective Subscriber Identification Modules.

Also, as today (January 19, 2021) was the deadline for telephone subscribers with NINs to register their SIMs with identity numbers, operators said that SIMs with unlinked submitted NINs would not be blocked.

It was also noticed that the NIMC had been able to provide approximately 45 million NINs so far, as it had been able to register approximately two million individuals in the last month since the Federal Government required people to register their SIMs with valid NINs.

This was confirmed to our correspondent by sources at the commission, as they noted that the crowds that welcomed the agency after the government’s directive were overwhelming.

On 15 December 2020, the Federal Government announced that all SIMs not registered with valid NINs on the telecommunications companies’ network will be blocked after 30 December 2020.

Subsequently, it extended the 30 December 2020 deadline following widespread opposition to the previous announcement and issued a three-week extension for NIN subscribers from 30 December 2020 to 19 January 2021.

It also gave a six-week extension from December 30, 2020 to February 9, 2021 for subscribers without NIN, but several organizations have called for further extension of the deadline or outright suspension of the NIN registration process due to the huge crowds who still had to have their NINs.
