Findings from a survey in Nigeria indicate that the country’s Covid-19 infection rates are much higher than previously recorded.

The findings suggest that one in five of those surveyed were infected in the states of Lagos, Enugu and Nasarawa.

As many as four million people may have contracted the disease in the country’s largest city, Lagos, though the official figure is currently 54,000.

The survey was carried out by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and the Medical Research Institute in September and October.

The NCDC chief said the results of the survey made the vaccination efforts by Nigeria “even more important”

More than 1,800 people were killed by Covid-19 in the region.

The Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine was recently approved for use in Nigeria by authorities, but it is not clear when it will receive its first doses.
